Disable Automatic Numbering & Set Default Font Style / Size in MS Word

Microsoft Word is a productivity app and among the best in the business. However, at times a few features meant to increase the productivity of the user can become annoying.

For example, the automatic numbering feature is enabled by default on your Microsoft Word app. Whenever the user tries to enter a number followed by a period, Microsoft Word will automatically convert it to a number list. While this can be a convenient feature for many, it can be annoying for the users who don’t want to use the numbered list at that time.

Another feature that can be annoying to the regular Microsoft Word user is having to change the default size and style of the font for every new document. This breaks the writer’s flow and messes up the format if the writer copies texts from some other source and paste it in the Word document.

If you are annoyed by the numbered list and font options, here is how to disable automatic numbering and set default font style & size in Microsoft Word.

Disable Automatic Numbering in MS Word

Disabling automatic numbering is easy on Microsoft Word. Here is how to do it.

  1. Launch Microsoft Word and open the Document you want to edit. A blank document would also do.
  2. Click on File and select Options.
  3. In the Options window, click on the Proofing tab.
  4. Under “Autocorrect options” section click on “AutoCorrect Options” button.
    Microsoft word Options - Proofing
  5. Open the “AutoCorrect as your type” tab.
Microsoft Word AutoCorrect - Autonunber list disable
  6. Uncheck the “Automatic numbered list” box under Apply as you type section.
  7. Click OK to save the changes.

Change Cut, Copy and Paste Settings

To prevent the Word document from keeping the default format from the copied source, you need to change the settings for Cut, Copy and Paste option.

  1. Go to File > Options.
  2. Click on the Advanced tab.
  3. Scroll down to the Cut, copy, and paste section.
  4. For “Pasting within the same document”Pasting between documents” “Pasting from other programs” click the drop-down menu and select “Keep Text Only” option.
Microsoft Word AutoCorrect - Advanced Keep Text Only
  5. Click OK to save the changes.

That’s it! Microsoft Word will not automatically apply numbers to any of your document unless you do it manually. You can enable the automatic number list again by following the same steps.

Set Default Font Size and Style in Microsoft Word

Follow these steps to set default font size and style in Microsoft Word.

  1. Launch Microsoft Word on your desktop and open a blank document.
  2. Press “Ctrl + D” on your keyboard. It will open Font settings Window.
  3. Now, select the Font, Font Style, and Size you want to set as default for your document.
  4. Once set, click on “Set as Default” button.
Microsoft Word AutoCorrect - Set as Default
  5. In the pop-dialog box, select “All documents based on the normal.dotm template?” option. If you want you can also set default font and style for the current document as well.
Microsoft Word AutoCorrect - Set default font size style for all
  6. Click OK to save the change.
  7. Click OK again on the Front screen to save the changes.

That’s it! You have successfully set default font style and size in Microsoft Word. You can repeat the steps to change the font size and style as per your requirement.

Fix “Try Again Later. Something happened On Our End” Windows Store Error

Windows 10 is said to be the best Windows OS ever built but you won’t hear anyone say it is also immune to errors. It is not and that is a well-known fact. The “Try again later. something happened on our end” error is related to Windows Store and can pop-up when you try to download and install new apps.

If you are facing this error and unable to use the Windows Store, here is how to fix it the easy way.

Reasons

The error can occur due to several reasons, and the error message may differ from user to user. Instead of the error mentioned above, you may get “Something happened on our end. Waiting a bit might help.”

The error seems to occur due to the incorrect location settings on your PC. For some changing the location to other country has worked. Re-registering the Windows Store app is another way to fix this error. We have listed both the fixes in this post so that you can resolve the error ASAP.

Fix 1: Change Language Format and Location in Settings

Some users have reported that changing the locations settings to the United States from their state has fixed the issue. If your language is set to Regional English, set it to the United States English as well. Follow the steps to do the same.

1. Open Control Panel by right-clicking on the Start and select “Control Panel” from the options.

2. Select “Clock, Language, and Region.” Under Region, click ” Change data, time, or number formats.

Control Panel Change Date, Time, Number format

3. In the Format tab, if the Format is set to your native language. Click the drop-down menu and set the format to “Match Windows display language” option.

4. Click the Location tab in the same window.

5. Under Home Location, click the drop-down menu and set it to the United States.

Region Location Settings

6. Click the Administrative tab. Under “Language for non-Unicode programs” section, click “Change system locale” button.

Region Administrative settings - Windows 107. Change the Current system Locale to the English United States as well.

8. To save the changes, click OK, Apply, OK button.

The changes will take effect when you restart the system. After restarting the system, open the Windows Store app and see if the error “Try Again Later. Something happened On Our End” is resolved.

Fix 2: Re-Register Windows Store App

If the error persists, you can try re-registering the Windows 10 Store app to fix the error. At times, the app may get corrupted and starting behaving abnormally which can be fixed by registering the app.

1. Open Command Prompt As Admin. You can do this by right-clicking on the Start and choose Command Prompt (Admin) option.

2. In the command prompt window, enter the following command. You have to copy and paste the command.

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command “& {$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + ‘\AppxManifest.xml’ ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest}”

Re-register Windows Store in Windows 10

3. Press Enter key to execute the command.

You can see the store being re-registered through the progress bar. The store will be re-registered in a few seconds. Once the Windows Store is re-registered, restart the system.

Fix “Wi-Fi Doesn’t have a Valid IP Configuration” Error

The WiFi connectivity on my Windows 10 laptop was working fine until I went to bed. When I woke up and connected my laptop to the WiFi again, it wasn’t connecting. It was showing “Secured, No internet” error.  I ran Windows troubleshooter just to find another error “Wi-Fi doesn’t have a valid IP configuration” error that Windows troubleshooter was unable to resolve. After a bit of brainstorming,  I was able to resolve the issue and connect to the internet.

This error in Windows 10 can be caused by several reasons including incorrect or corrupted network settings, outdated drivers, etc. What worked for me was to reset the TCP/IP network configuration through the command prompt. However, I have also listed other fixes just in case my fix doesn’t work for you.

Fix 1: Reset TCP/IP Settings

Let’s begin with the first solution that worked for me. You need to enter a few commands in the command prompt and restart your PC. If everything goes right, you should be able to connect to the WiFi and fix the problem.

Open the command prompt as administrator. To do this, right-click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin).

In the command prompt window type the following commands one by one:

Netsh winsock reset

Netsh Int ip reset

You need to restart your computer before the changes can be applied. So, restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

Fix 2: Release / Renew IP Configuration

You can try to release and renew the IP configuration to fix WiFi doesn’t have a valid IP configuration problem. All you have to do is type two commands that would release and renew the IP configuration respectively. Here is how to do it.

Open a command prompt as administrator.

In the command prompt type the following command and hit enter to run them:

Ipconfig /release

Ipconfig /renew

Close the command prompt window and check if the problem is fixed.

Fix 3: Manually Set the IP address

If you have several computers at home or office connected to the same WiFi network, then you can try to assign an IP address to fix this problem manually. To manually set a IP address do the following.

Open Control Panel and go to Network and Internet and then open Network and Sharing Center.

On the left side, select Change adapter settings.

Right-click on your WiFi connection and select Properties.

WiFi Properties

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.

Select Use the following IP address option.

Now enter the following in the given field:

IP address: 192.168.1.16

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Under “use the following DNS address” option, enter the following:

Prefered DNS server: 8.8.8.8

Alternate DNS Server:  8.8.4.4

Click OK to save the changes.

Fix 4: Uninstall WiFi adapter Driver

If none of the above-mentioned solutions fixed the issue, then you need to uninstall the WiFi adapter driver and reinstall it. Some users have reported this to be as a working solution.

Open Control Panel.

Go to Hardware and Sound.

Under Device and Printers click “Device Manager“.

Expand Network adapter category and right click on Wireless Lan device and select Uninstall.

Click OK if asked to confirm the decision to delete the driver.

Restart your PC and open Device Manager again.

Click Action and select Scan for Hardware changes.

device manager scan for hardware changes

Now the PC will scan and reinstall the WiFi adapter driver.

How to Diagnose and Fix Dead USB Port

I have had many computers in my working space over the years. While some lasted long enough to be called dated, some just gave up too soon. Of all the problems, a dead USB port is the most common issue any Windows users may face. The dead USB Port problem is common with cheap Windows machines, but your outrageously expensive laptop is not immune to USB port failures either.

It happens that you connect a USB device into your computer and your computer refuses to detect the hardware. In such a situation, there are two possibilities. Either your USB device is faulty, or the computer’s USB port has a problem. If you are an in a similar situation right now, don’t panic and bash your laptop onto the wall, believe me, it won’t fix it. Here is a better way to diagnose and repair a dead USB port on your computer.

Diagnose the USB Device and USB Port

The first step to diagnosing a not working USB port is to make sure that it is the faulty USB Port and not the USB device you are trying to connect with problems.

Disconnect the USB device and connect it to another USB port on your Computer. If detected, your USB device has no problem. Now connect another USB device to the same USB port that did not detect the USB device earlier. If it remains undetected, then you have a faulty USB port.

A faulty USB port does not mean it is a hardware issue. Computers being electronic devices can have temporary glitches and problems that a quick restart can fix. It can also be a USB driver related problem which can be fixed with an update. So, before you go in full Louis Rossmann mode, let’s find out why the USB port is not working.

Restart Your PC to Fix the Not Working USB Port

As I said earlier, the USB Port not working problem may be a temporary glitch that can be fixed with a simple restart. At times, a single faulty USB port can shut down other USB port from detecting any devices.

All you have to do is shut down your computer and start it again. In case your computer doesn’t have a hardware issue, the USB ports should be working fine now.

Still not working? Restart your PC a few times more. As silly it may sound, your USB drivers may not be loading properly, but restarting your PC a few times can do the trick.

Disable USB Selective Suspend Option

Windows 10 and other versions of Windows including XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 comes with a USB Selective Suspend feature that allows you to automatically put USB devices in low power mode when they are in idle state. USB selective suspend process is particularly essential for a laptop for providing better battery optimization.

However, USB Selective Suspend can also create trouble and leave your USB ports in the non-functional state due to several reasons. In case all or one of the USB port is not working on your computer, you can try disabling USB selective suspend temporarily to fix the issue.

Follow these steps to disable USB selective Suspend in Windows 10

These steps also work with the older version of Windows including
Windows 7,8 and XP.

1. Open Control Panel. Right-click on Start and select Control Panel from the options.

Control Panel Windows 10 - Fix Dead USB Port2. Click System and Security and then click on Power Options.

Power Options - Windows 10- Fix Dead USB Port3. Click Change Plan Settings.

Change Plan Settings - Fix Dead USB Port4. Click on Change advanced power settings option.

Change advanced power settings - fix dead USB Port5. Expand USB Settings and then expand USB Selective Suspend settings.

Disable USB Selective Suspend6. If the “USB Selective Suspend” option is enabled, click the drop-down menu and select Disabled.

7. For Laptop users, USB selective suspend option is available for both Battery and Plugged in, so make sure you change the options accordingly.

8. Click Apply to save the changes.

Now you need to restart your PC. Connect your USB device to the non-working USB port and see if disabling USB selective suspend fixed the issue.

Uninstall USB Host Controller Driver

The next place to look when your USB device does not work is the device manager. Device Manager shows all the devices that are connected to your computer. To fix a dead USB port, we need to analyze Universal Series Bus controllers and associated drivers.

1. Open Device Manager by right-clicking on Start > Device Manager.

Device Manager - Start - Windows 102. From the Device Manager, scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and expand it. We are looking for eXtensible Host Controller option.

Device Manager - Windows 10 - Fix Dead USB Port3. If you don’t see the option, click on Scan for Hardware Changes option under Action. Device Manager will scan for any missing hardware and list it.

4. Right-click on eXtensible Host Controller and select Uninstall Device option.

Uninstall Device Manager Host ControllerYou may also need to uninstall other USB devices listed in Device Manager Universal Serial Bus controller section.

If you have any unknown USB devices listed, uninstall them as well.

Once the Host Controller is uninstalled, restart the PC. Windows will reinstall the drivers as the PC restarts, and in the meantime, anything connected to the USB ports may stop responding until the drivers are reinstalled automatically.

Update USB Drivers

At times outdated drivers may create issues with a computer’s USB port. You most certainly have an obsolete driver if some of the USB devices don’t work with your PC instead of all.

To get the latest driver, visit your laptop manufacturer’s website and run the tools provided by the company that checks for the outdated drivers and suggests the best drivers compatible with your hardware. Install the hardware and restart the PC.

Perform a System Restore

If nothing seems working, you can try performing a System Restore. If you have created a System Restore Point earlier or have one created by default, you can restore your PC to earlier System Restore point.

reset this PC - Windows 10

System Restore if configured on your PC does not affect files and documents saved on your PC. But, any recently installed programs and drivers might get uninstalled. If you don’t have a restore point created, you may simply reset the PC by going to Settings > Recovery > Reset This PC.

Check the USB Ports for Hardware Failure

If none of those as mentioned earlier solutions above work then you may need to check your USB port for a hardware problem. If you are not comfortable opening the laptop or PC, take help of a professional or your friend who deals with computer hardware.

Clean Dust – Over time the USB ports start collecting dust which if not cleaned may create a problem and leave the USB ports non-functional. You can begin with checking if the USB ports are clean. If not, use a can of compressed air to clean the dust.

Remove and Connect USB Port Connection – If you can access the computer’s motherboard, you should be able to remove the USB patch cable from the motherboard and then reconnect it. Doing this may help you fix the issue. Then again, don’t do this if you don’t know what you are doing.

Computer Repair shops can be expensive at times. Make sure you take the computer to multiple shops as some may insist on replacing the entire motherboard to fix the dead USB ports which might be unnecessary at times. If you know how to use a soldering iron, you may watch some YouTube videos to fix it yourself.
